Surprised you found me! Hello, I’m Luyao Zheng—some might call me Mia, but let’s stick with Luyao. As a wise friend once said, 'Let people learn your name—it’s worth it!'

As I’ve started building a life in Topeka, I’ve noticed something peculiar: Chinese Americans in Topeka often seem like separated atoms—living parallel lives, rarely crossing paths. Why is that? Are we unconsciously avoiding connection? Or is it that, even when we meet, we fail to recognize one another as part of the same story?

This corner explores that very question: Who are we, and how do we find a sense of belonging in a new community?

Here, I share stories that touch on the unique experiences of being Chinese in Topeka—building businesses, navigating interracial marriages and cultural differences, raising mixed-heritage children in both the East and the West, and celebrating how Chinese women inspire and uplift one another.
